"Don't capture images. Create photographs."

Photography Chose Me

I've loved the look of glass in telescopes and camera lenses since I was very young. Something about the glass just looks cool. After graduating high school in 1977, my parents bought my first 35mm film camera. I attended a photography class at a local community college that Fall. Unfortunately, the cost of film and developing forced me to put formal photography training on hold. In August of 2004 I was able to rekindle my love of photography with new equipment, and a renewed intensity.

My photography has grown a lot since 2004. I now realize that each photograph must be refined and polished to bring out my original vision. The entire process, from imagining the photograph to the final product, is as individual as the photographer.

Most of my flower photos are created while spending time with my wife Susan, and our dogs Max and Missy, in the gardens we grow around our home. Many of the nature photos are created during our visits to the beautiful parks and gardens in Michigan. The impressionist style photos are inspired by my appreciation of the paintings by Claude Monet.

Many years ago Susan gave me a little plastic card with an inspirational prose named "Success". This prose is most often attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson. A bit of research on the net and you find it is more of an aggregation of works by several authors. I don't care who, or how many people actually created the prose, it describes how I feel about everything very well. I believe I can leave the world a little bit better by just doing what is right, and living as well as possible. I hope you can see my appreciation of the beauty in all things through my photography.

SUCCESS

To laugh often and much
to win the respect
of intelligent people
and the affection of children;
to earn the appreciation
of honest critics and endure
the betrayal of false friends;
to appreciate beauty,
to find the best in others;
to leave the world a bit better,
whether by a healthy child,
a garden patch
or a redeemed social condition;
to know even one life
has breathed easier
because you have lived.
That is to have succeeded.
